Meet the members – Rapidrunner Expeditions

We’re very luck here at Much Better Adventures to come across a range of fantastic adventure holiday providers from around the world. All our ‘muchbetter’ members do fantastic work, environmentally and/or socially, wherever they are based. Now and again you come across companies which go a little further, and we like to call these our ‘Pioneers’. Rapidrunner Expeditions are one such company, and here they introduce themselves.

Who are you and your team?

Rapidrunner Expeditions, established by Nepali/British husband and wife team Raja and Tessa Lama, is a Nepalese company based in Pokhara, the gateway to outdoor adventure in Nepal. Our family run operations, focus on providing fun, eco-friendly and safe expeditions on Nepalese rivers. At Rapidrunner Expeditions we know that our staff are what makes us different. We employ some of the best trained, most professional guides in Nepal, many of whom have a wealth of international guiding experience. We only employ fully qualified Nepali guides so that we can be sure that your trip will be professionally led. We sometimes host visiting foreign guides but they are not paid and always go on our trips as extras so they dont take away jobs from Nepali guides.

What inspired you to start, and how long have you been doing it?

Raja has over 18 years experience of guiding expeditions on Nepali Rivers and wanted to establish his own company to share his passion and love of the river with visitors to Nepal. He prides himself on his excellent customer care and aims to raise the bar for Nepalese rafting companies by providing service, instruction and safety at internationally approved levels. Tessa first came to Nepal in 1999 and fell in love at first sight with the stunning mountain and river environments, the culture and the Nepalese people (especially Raja!). Over the years she has built up an in depth knowledge of Nepal and the activities and experiences that tourists seek. She is usually found in our shop on Lakeside, giving advice and information to visitors.

Why did you choose Nepal?

Its our home! We know how special it is and we want to share Nepal’s magic with everyone.

What makes you Muchbetter?

Rapidrunner Expeditions has been made a Muchbetter Pioneer member, due to our creation of Rapidrunner Chance, a charitable organisation which provides a two year apprenticeship, free of charge, to local Nepalis to help them become river guides. This way, we are truly putting something back into the local community. In addition we are also: Supporting the development and improvement of NARA to raise standards for all rafting operators in Nepal Creating a ‘local’ river resort, run by the local villagers where rafting companies can stay overnight – brings employment to local villagers Allowing more young people to join our rapidrunner chance initiative – giving young people the skills for a new job in rafting/kayaking Importing biodegradable soap into Nepal to stop the pollution into rivers Working with other organisations in Nepal to make steps towards getting formal protection of the riverside environment, i.e. sites of outstanding natural beauty.

Insider tip for your area:

Life in Nepal starts early, so get out of bed at sunrise one morning and take a walk around the Pokhara backstreets for a real glimpse of local culture (Of course you will get fantastic views of the Himalaya too!).

What is the view from your office window?

As for the view from our office, we are so lucky here at Rapidrunner. In one direction we have the beautiful and peaceful Phewa Lake and in the other we have the stunning panorama of the Machapuchure and Annapurna Himalaya. Its pretty hard to beat!

You can join Rapidrunner on an amazingexpedition down the Tamur River, or learn to kayak on their 4 day course!
