Meet the members – OneSeed Expeditions

1. Who are you and your team?
OneSeed Expeditions is made up of team members in the U.S. and Nepal. Chris Baker, our Founder, is based in the U.S. but splits his time between Colorado and Kathmandu. Bishnu Thapa, our Director of Guiding Operations, and Tek Bahadur Dong, our Director of Social Performance, are both based full-time in Nepal. In addition to our management team, we have a full staff of guides and assistants all operating out of our local office. Learn more about the OneSeed Team.
2. What inspired you to start, and how long have you been doing it?
OneSeed really grew out of the passions of our team. Chris has spent much of the past seven years bouncing back and forth between Nepal and the States–as a teacher, researcher, adviser, and mountain bum. In 2008, while working with the microfinance platform Kiva.org, Chris first came up with the idea of using travel-generated revenue to fund small businesses in the Kathmandu Valley. That same simple model–great trips and local investment–remains at the core of what we do.
Bishnu and Tek, our in-country directors, both bring a passion for applied social science and years of guiding experience to OneSeed. Their unique understanding of the region allows us to get well off the beaten path and into the local communities we support.
3. Why did you choose Nepal?
Nepal provides a perfect launching point for OneSeed with its combination of impressive mountains, rich culture, and need for capital investment in small businesses. After solidifying our model in the Himalayas, OneSeed plans to expand to other regions of the world.
4. What makes you muchbetter?
OneSeed prides itself on providing the best security and accountability in the industry. We offer the ability to book in country with pre-trip consultation and support. Essential to our mission is investment in the communities through which we travel. We offer comprehensive year-round health insurance, fair wages, and language training to our guides and porters in Nepal.
Through the OneSeed Fund, we provide affordable loans to women living in poverty by investing 10 percent of our revenues in trusted local microfinance banks. Our equitable employment standards offer our entire team, from porters and guides through upper management, a profit sharing stake in the company.
OneSeeds partner lodges adhere to our OneSeed sustainability rubric, which outlines expectations for limiting deforestation and controlling waste–two of the most pressing environmental issues in the Nepali Himalaya.
We use the power of travel to make the world a little bit better.
5. Insider tip for your area
OneSeed prides itself on allowing its travellers access to the hidden side of Nepal. From quaint teahouses to historic temples and monasteries, OneSeed will bring you an intimate view of Nepal. For a preview of the mountain trails you will experience on a OneSeed trip, check out our satellite fly-overs (powered by Google Earth) from the leisurely Langtang Journey to the more ambitious trek to Everest Base Camp — and everything in between.
6. What is the view from your office window? Please include a photo!
This is Koti, OneSeed’s least-productive employee, enjoying the cool concrete floors of the re-purposed industrial warehouse that serves as our green office space in downtown Denver. (Sorry, our only window is the giant skylight above our desks.)

Here’s a quick introduction to one of our newest muchbetter members – OneSeed Expeditions, who run a range of hiking and trekking trips in Nepal.
