Winter often makes it a lot harder to work out. The shorter days make us feel tired, the cold and often unpleasant weather can make us reluctant to drive, and the period before the festive season will also see many people try to cut back on their spending. All of these factors, and more, can contribute towards many people’s cutting back on their exercise over winter, or even cutting it out altogether. But if you’re planning to go on an adventure holiday this year, it’s vitally important that you keep up your regular exercise regime in the months leading up to your going away. Here’s how:
Firstly, you don’t have to make that much of a change to your normal exercise regime in order to keep working out over winter. Simple adjustments will allow you workout regimen to continue, as long as you give yourself enough time to acclimatise. It’s very easy to get disheartened by a momentary drop in activity. But don’t let this become your excuse to give up.
If you’re an outdoor activity enthusiast, there’s no reason why this should stop in winter. Even something as simple as warming up indoors first can help your body adjust to the cooler temperatures. Spend 5 to 10 minutes stretching and performing some light on-the-spot cardiovascular exercises. Dressing appropriately is also important. You may feel cold when you first head outside, but as you exercise your body temperature will increase. Opting for light layers will ensure that you remove or add clothing to suit your particular needs at any moment.
Getting to the Gym
If the dark evenings are affecting your exercise, your gym attendance might be bolstered by something as simple as changing the time when you go. Instead of trying to make it after work, go in the morning or on your lunch break instead. Gyms can be useful things in winter, allowing us to do all kinds of exercise that we might not physically be able to do outside. For example, jogging on icy pavements can be treacherous, but a gym with good quality treadmills can help us keep up our cardiovascular fitness. If you’re not already a member, check out different gyms to find out what they provide in the way of equipment. If they get their machines from a reputable provider, such as Fitness Warehouse, you’re onto a winner.
Ready for Your Holiday
If you’ve followed the above advice you should feel ready and prepared for your winter holiday adventure. Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding or hiking, as long as you’ve prepared your body you’re sure to have a wonderful time. And, even better, if you’re in good physical condition you’ll be able to enjoy the sights and scenery along the way even more than you would have otherwise.
