Why Jackson?
Jackson Hole is the original Wild West cowboy town, the birthplace of extreme skiing in the States, and a truly year round adventure destination. Situated slap bang in the middle of the majestic Teton mountain range, Jackson is a massive playground for powder hounds! With fantastic brew pubs, great live bands, and with restaurants and accommodation to suit all budgets, Jackson has a unique way of combining the wild with the welcoming: the true jewel in Wyomings Stetson.
Best resort based skiing adventures
If its extreme skiing folklore youre after then you simply must take Jacksons infamous red Tram (cable car!) to the top of Rendezvous mountain. From here you can access or hike into a whole host of steep and deep terrain including the Cody Bowl, the Headwall, and of course the legendary extreme skiing right of passage, Corbets Couloir. Inbounds there are loads of great challenging pistes and tree runs but be aware however that even the inbounds terrain can be pretty gnarly: make sure you know where youre going!
Best backcountry skiing adventures
The Teton mountain range is no place for amateurs or those without local knowledge so if getting out in the backcountry is your goal then the first port of call will be to contact a local guiding outfit. There are loads of trails around Teton Pass but if its a peak youre after then Mt Albright is a great option. A day tour to the top of Albright (10,552) is for the intermediate/advanced backcountry skier and offers fantastic views, great terrain and an opportunity for a life punctuating adventure.
Best of the winter rest
If youre feeling like your legs need a wee rest, theres loads of other stuff you can do in and around Jackson in the winter time. If its a combo of nature and adventure that youre after theres the chance to drive your own dog sled with an Iditarod legend in Granite Hot Springs where theres wildlife a plenty. A more benign yet equally rewarding option is a sleigh ride visit to the Elk Reserve just out of town – a fascinating journey in local history and the natural environment. And if you really want to explore right into the heart of the Wild West, you can always snowmobile deep into Yellowstone National Park and get up close with bison, bald eagles, moose and of course, the Old Faithful geyser.
Best places for fuelling up pre and post adventure
Activity requires energy and fuelling up pre or post adventure in Jackson is a pretty phenomenal experience. If youre after a ski mountaineers breakfast the size of Grand Teton The Bunnery (http://www.bunnery.com/) or Bubbas (http://www.bubbasjh.com/) in town are definintely the places to go. This is the land of opportunity and remember that if you head into Pearl Street Bagels(http://www.pearlstreetbagels.com/) in Wilson or Jackson the range of bagels and fillings and coffees on offer will most likely befuddle and confuse a non-US resident so if in doubt, just copy someone else its all super tasty! As far as restaurants are concerned, again there is so much choice but Il Villaggio Osteria (http://www.jhosteria.com/) in Teton Village is a must a fantastic wine bar/restaurant with great service, fab quality food and awesome wine. Book it. Another restaurant worthy of note is the totally unpretentious Q Roadhouse (http://www.qjacksonhole.com/) in between Teton Village and Jackson, the food is quality burgers/salads and ribs but by far the best thing is the free pot of monkey nuts on your table empty shells are just thrown on the floor!!
Best places for the well-earned post adventure drink
If youre staying in the town of Jackson Hole itself and fancy yourself a bit of cowboy action, then park yourself on a stool at either the Million Dollar or Silver Dollar Cowboy Bars. Both feature good live music, a mix of clientele, and a whole host of photo opportunities! Should you be based up at Teton Village where the lifts are then the Mangy Moose is a must great beer, great music and monstrous plates of Nachos are all part of the formula that makes The Moose world famous as an aprs ski bar. Wherever you go make sure you order local Wyoming is home to some fantastic breweries such as Snake River and Grand Teton Brewing Company both have bars on site and make some dangerously tasty beverages!
And finally
Lots of places in the world have amazing scenery and plentiful opportunities to adventure in the outdoors, but very few places can offer the vibe of Jackson Hole and the State of Wyoming. The people are unbelievably friendly, customer service oriented, passionate about their part of the world and sharing it with others. If I could get my hands on a Green Card Id move there in the blink of an eye, Europe definitely has a lot to learn
